Adolescent Mental Health Services

Brief & Long Term Counselling Services

Children’s Centre Thunder Bay offers Brief or Long term counselling services to children between the ages of 13 and 18, which may include case management and advocacy as well.

Brief Counselling Services consist of 1 to 3 sessions, combining treatment with an educational component designed to support a youth and/or family with a single area of concern, such as a life event that is causing a significant amount of stress. These sessions may include the caregivers or the child individually, or may include a combination.

Long Term Counselling Services involve both individual and family therapy. The service begins with an assessment, and usually consists of weekly or bi-weekly sessions, with consistent reassessments on an ongoing basis. This service may be beneficial for youth experiencing significant emotional, social, and/or behavioural issues such as trauma, mood swings, depression, anxiety, attention deficit issues, suicidal tendencies, self-harm, self-esteem, food-related issues, peer issues, family conflict, and issues of identity.

Both Brief and Long Term services seek to increase skill and coping ability, with the ultimate goal of supporting families in living healthier and happier lives.
