Autism Assessment Services
Who Can Use This Service?
Children are eligible for an Autism Assessment at the Children's Centre if,
- the child is 7 years age or under
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is seriously suspected but not been diagnosed
- the child and family resides in or near the City of Thunder Bay
- the parent is in support and consents to have the assessment completed
Children are not eligible for this service if,
- the child is 7 years of age or older
- the parent does not consent to the assessment
- the child and family reside outside the City of Thunder Bay
What Is Offered?
Children who are suspected of having ASD will first be screened to see if they are appropriate. Once this is completed and it is determined that they are appropriate for an assessment, the child and family will participate in an assessment and diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals from the fields of psychology, social work, and speech-language pathology.
It is important to note that there may be a long wait for services.
How Can This Help?
This program helps children and their family by
- Completing an assessment and making a diagnosis if appropriate
- Providing a comprehensive understanding what the diagnosis is or is not
- Providing recommendations for further services
- Supporting referrals for support and treatment services
- Recommending what would be helpful in terms of parenting, treatment and education for families whose child is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder
