Speech and Language Assessment and Intervention

Who Can Use This Service?

Children from birth until entry into Senior Kindergarten are eligible to receive services. No child is too young for a screening provided that problems are suspected. Children attending Senior Kindergarten are not eligible as these children are served through the School System, Community Care Access Centre, George Jeffrey Children's Centre, or Integrated Services for Northern Children. Please speak to your child's teacher or principal for more details about these services.

What Is Offered?

Children’s Centre Thunder Bay is one of five agencies locally that provides services to preschoolers in Thunder Bay and District. Together these agencies are known as Preschool Communication Services or PCS. Our Speech Language Pathologists provide clinical services in a variety of community locations in the City and District of Thunder Bay. These include speech assessment, individual and group therapy, monitoring, home programming and community education For more detailed description of the services offered as well as information regarding normal development and communication milestones, please go to Thunder Bay District Health Unit website noted below.

How Can This Service Help?

This service can help children improve communication skills and abilities and strengthen the parent’s and other caregiver’s capacity to support children’s communication needs.

How Can You Find Out More Or Access This Service?

 Children’s Centre does not accept direct referrals for this service. If you live in Thunder Bay, call the Thunder Bay District Health Unit at 625-5936 and ask to make a speech-language referral. If you live in the District of Thunder Bay, call the Health Unit branch office nearest you or call 1-888-294-6630 and ask to make a speech/language referral. You do not need a doctor's referral to start this process. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to make the referral themselves
